The San Clemente Island ASBS is about 70 miles west of San Diego. San Clemente Island is owned by the U.S. Navy. It is the southernmost of the Channel Islands and is about 56 square miles. The southern end of the island is a shore bombardment target for naval ships and aircraft. The navy attempts to coexist with a variety of rare, threatened and endangered plants and animals, including the San Clemente Island loggerhead shrike, island night lizard and island fox. The Navy actually has a hatchery for loggerhead shrikes on the island.
Key pollution threats include ordinance and other contaminants from continuous military operations.
