Where valid testing has developed 96 hour LC50 values for aquatic organisms (the concentration that kills one half of the test organisms in 96 hours), the Board will consider one tenth of this value for the most sensitive species tested as the upper limit (daily maximum) for the protection of aquatic life. Three of three statistically significant sediment toxicity testing samples violated the narrative toxicity objective. Toxicity observations were associated with pyrethroid pesticides. LC50s for sediment-bound pyrethroids were used in this study as toxicity threshold benchmarks in a Toxic Unit (TU) analysis normalized to organic carbon content. The TU analysis of Hospital Creek sediment samples demonstrated that the three samples with significant bioassay mortality had pyrethroid TUs well above 1.0. The samples collected on 8/27/04, 9/13/04, and 10/13/04 had 15.59, 2.47, and 5.57 TUs of pyrethroids, respectively. Chlorpyrifos was observed in two of three samples but at well below 1.0 TU. Bifenthrin appeared to play a dominant role in the toxic samples, followed by lambda-cyhalothrin, and esfenvalerate. Traces of permethrin were also observed in the 8/27/04 sample.LC50 concentrations for a 10-day exposure of Hyalella azteca to pyrethroid contaminated sediments were determined by Amweg et al., 2005.
