2006 Impaired Water Bodies

2010 Integrated Report (Clean Water Act Section 303(d) List / 305(b) Report) — Statewide

Late addition to 2006 303(d) list -USEPA lists Microcystin Toxins for the Klamath River from the Oregon-California Border to Iron Gate Dam

  • On May 29, 2008, USEPA made the decision to add microcystin toxins as an additional cause of impairment to one Klamath River segment (Middle Hydrologic Area: Oregon to Iron Gate) previously listed by California in its 2006 303(d) List. Based on comments, USEPA revised the description of the Klamath River segment impaired for microcycstin toxins as "the reach of the Klamath River including the Copco and Iron Gate Reservoirs." Accordingly, this segment does not include Klamath River upstream of Copco I Reservoir to Oregon.
  • On March 13, 2008, USEPA reconsidered its prior approval of the State's 2006 303(d) list and was deciding to add a listing for microcystin toxins for the Klamath River from the Oregon-California border, downstream to and including Iron Gate reservoir (Klamath River HU, Middle HA, Oregon to Iron Gate) located in the North Coast Region of the State. USEPA announced via Federal Register notice the availability of, and opportunity to comment on USEPA’s reconsideration and decisions regarding three segments of the Klamath River in California.

California’s 2006 Clean Water Act Section 303(d) List of Water Quality Limited Segments

Under Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act, states, territories and authorized tribes are required to develop a list of water quality limited segments. These waters on the list do not meet water quality standards, even after point sources of pollution have installed the minimum required levels of pollution control technology. The Clean Water Act requires that these jurisdictions establish priority rankings for water on the lists and develop action plans, called as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL), to improve water quality.

  • List of Water Quality Limited Segments Requiring TMDLs
This portion contains those waters and pollutants where water quality standards are not met and require one or more TMDLs.
  • List of Water Quality Limited Segments Being Addressed by USEPA Approved TMDLs
This portion contains those waters and pollutants where water quality standards are not met but a TMDL has been developed and approved and an approved implementation is expected to result in attainment of water quality standards.

  • List of Water Quality Limited Segments Being Addressed by Action Other Than TMDLs
This portion contains those waters and pollutants where water quality standards are not met but is being addressed by an action other than a TMDL that is expected to result in attainment of water quality standards.
