Type	Description
NPDES	NPDES is an acronym for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System. NPDES permits regulate the discharge of waste to navigable waters. In this Region, we issue Individual NPDES Permits to a specific facility for specific discharge(s), such as discharge from Public Owned Treatment Works (POTW), refineries, power plants, manufacturing, etc. In addition, we issue a General NPDES Permit to categories of discharges that occur from similar operations, such as groundwater cleanup projects, constructing dewatering, hydrostatic testing, etc.
NON15	Non15 refers to that group of activities involving wastewater discharges to land and groundwater. Wastewater disposal projects requiring Waste Discharge Requirements under the Non15 program would include on-site septic disposal systems, and applications involving groundwater percolation/recharge, irrigation, injection of remediation compounds, and re-injection/percolation for groundwater cleanup efforts, etc. The nature and discharge rate of the activity would be evaluated to determine whether an individual permit is needed or if enrollment under an existing General Permit would be possible. The term Non15 acknowledges that it is a land disposal activity, but that it is separate and distinct from those waste disposal activities involving landfills, on-site soil cleanup projects, and surface impoundments that are regulated under Chapter 15 by the Landfills Unit.
