Environmental Laboratory Enforcement

Welcome to the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program’s Enforcement webpage. ELAP’s Enforcement Unit was created in 2015 to protect public health and the environment by ensuring laboratory compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements. Enforcement is a critical component in creating the deterrence needed to encourage the regulated community to anticipate, identify, and correct violations. Our role is to ensure that violations of statutes and regulations result in firm, fair, and consistent enforcement. Our technical staff review complaints regarding laboratories from concerned agencies and members of the public and perform verification inspections to observe that corrective actions were properly completed by laboratories after routine on-site audits. ELAP partners with the State Water Board’s Office of Enforcement to provide representation in all enforcement actions. ELAP enforces legal compliance for accredited laboratories by pursuing administrative and criminal actions against laboratories performing egregious violations against the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Act and applicable regulations.
