Rain Garden Plaza
Thank You Ocean released a video podcast on the newly constructed Elk Grove Rain Garden. In spring 2012, the City of Elk Grove, a community just south of Sacramento, California, opened a rain garden that is a magnet for wildlife, prevents pollution from running off into local streams, and an important tool to teach others about how use similar earth-friendly techniques in their own yard. This is an application that enables iPhone users to help monitor water quality and alert authorities to problems; available in Apple’s App Store. California is the first state to partner with IBM to use this data to monitor the thousands of miles of creeks and streams in their jurisdiction is California’s State Water Control Board.

Nurdles - Plastic Debris in our Waterways
The State Water Board and the San Francisco Regional Water Board have joined with U.S. EPA in a unique collaborative effort to cut the amount of plastic debris in our waterways. The effort begins where plastic product manufacturing begins . . . with "nurdles".

What is a TMDL?
A Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is a critical tool in restoring sick and contaminated water bodies. A TMDL can address anything from chemical contamination to sediment and temperature. The Shasta River provides a good example of how a TMDL works.

State Water Board scientists are collecting mussels around the state to see if there is evidence of contaminants. This effort is part of the Board's ongoing Mussel Watch program and tissues will be analyzed at labs in cooperation with the federal government. Final data will be used in the Board's evaluation of contaminants of emerging concern.
The California Water Boards have broad responsibilities to protect surface and ground water quality and balance competing demands on our water resources. The complexity of the Water Boards programs are reflected in the number of mandated programs and the regional variation that exists throughout the State. This film tells the stories of a few Water Board employees, what their jobs entail, and why they have chosen to work for the Water Boards.
