On July 7th, 2011 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LAWP) their request for project name change from California Aqueduct Pump Storage Project (FERC No. 2426) to South State Water Project. The Licensees’ stated goal of this name change was to avoid confusion with other features of the California Aqueduct and to more properly reflect the location of project facilities.

On August 1st, 2016 DWR and LAWP filed with FERC a Notice of Intent (NOI) to file an Application for a new License and a Pre-Application Document (PAD) for the West Branch of South State Water Project. Separately, on August 1st, 2016 DWR filed with FERC a Notice of Intent (NOI) to file an Application for a new License and a Pre-Application Document (PAD) for the East Branch of South State Water Project. These notices requested that upon completion of relicensing, FERC split the project in the west branch South State Water Project (SSWP), (FERC No. 2426) and the east branch Devil Canyon Power Development (DCP), (FERC No. 14797). The notices also request that the SSWP be relicensed under the Integrated Licensing Process and DCP be relicensed under the Traditional Licensing Process.
