Franklin Creek Nutrients TMDL (Carpinteria Salt Marsh Watershed)
Information
Problem Statement - Streams of the Franklin Creek watershed do not support a range of beneficial uses and the impairments constitute serious water quality problems. Currently, designated drinking water supply (MUN), aquatic habitat (WARM, COLD, SPWN), and groundwater recharge (GWR) beneficial uses are not being supported. For example, 272 of 288 water quality samples (95%) exceed the MUN water quality objective. Franklin Creek also does not meet non-regulatory recommended guidelines for nitrate in agricultural supply water (AGR) for sensitive crop types, indicating that designated agricultural supply beneficial uses may be adversely impacted.
Implementation of the proposed TMDL should reduce or eliminate nutrient pollution that impact human health (drinking water) and prevent the degradation of aquatic habitat, both of which are high priorities of the Central Coast Water Board.
