Nonpotable Reuse Information
About
Recycled water from sources that contain domestic waste may be used for a variety of nonpotable applications in California including irrigation, impoundments, and industrial or commercial cooling. The allowable applications, required treatment, and use area requirements are defined in the Water Recycling Criteria, Title 22, Division 4, Chapter 3 of the California Code of Regulations.
"Undisinfected secondary recycled water" means oxidized wastewater.
Undisinfected secondary can be used for surface irrigation of limited types of crops and flushing of sanitary sewers. The full list of allowable uses is described in Article 3 of the Water Recycling Criteria.
"Disinfected secondary-23 recycled water" means recycled water that has been oxidized and disinfected so that the median concentration of total coliform bacteria in the disinfected effluent does not exceed a most probable number (MPN) of 23 per 100 milliliters utilizing the bacteriological results of the last seven days for which analyses have been completed, and the number of total coliform bacteria does not exceed an MPN of 240 per 100 milliliters in more than one sample in any 30 day period.
Disinfected secondary-23 recycled water can generally be used for surface irrigation of limited types of crops, landscape impoundments without decorative fountains, and other industrial or commercial processes where mist is not created and the water does not contact workers. The full list of allowable uses is described in Article 3 of the Water Recycling Criteria.
"Disinfected secondary-2.2 recycled water" means recycled water that has been oxidized and disinfected so that the median concentration of total coliform bacteria in the disinfected effluent does not exceed a most probable number (MPN) of 2.2 per 100 milliliters utilizing the bacteriological results of the last seven days for which analyses have been completed, and the number of total coliform bacteria does not exceed an MPN of 23 per 100 milliliters in more than one sample in any 30 day period.
Disinfected secondary-2.2 recycled water can generally be used for similar applications to disinfected secondary-23 recycled water with some additions. The full list of allowable uses is described in Article 3 of the Water Recycling Criteria.
"Disinfected tertiary recycled water" means a filtered and subsequently disinfected wastewater. The filtration process must meet the criteria described in §60301.320 (a) or (b). The disinfection process must meet the criteria described in §60301.230(a)(1) or (2). The median concentration of total coliform bacteria measured in the disinfected effluent must not exceed an MPN of 2.2 per 100 milliliters utilizing the bacteriological results of the last seven days for which analyses have been completed and the number of total coliform bacteria does not exceed an MPN of 23 per 100 milliliters in more than one sample in any 30 day period. No sample shall exceed an MPN of 240 total coliform bacteria per 100 milliliters.
Disinfected tertiary recycled water can generally be used for the widest variety of applications, including landscape irrigation of publicly accessible areas, food crops, non-restricted recreational impoundments, dual plumbed facilities, and various industrial and commercial processes where the water may come in contact with workers. The full list of allowable uses is described in Article 3 of the Water Recycling Criteria
